Bird Calls Radio's Bird of the Day for Monday, Aug. 15

The Bird Calls Radio Bird of Day for Monday, Aug. 15, is the Carolina wren.

The Carolina wren is a small, handsome bird that is slowly increasing its range northward. They are now fairly common sightings in southern New England and being seen increasingly in the middle of New England.

Carolina wrens, unlike house wrens, remain with us throughout winter and are common sightings at our feeders after snowstorms. Since they are more of a southern bird, some Carolina wrens don’t survive our harsh winters.

Carolina wrens are a warm brown or rusty color, unlike the brown house wren. They also have a tan eye stripe and buffy chest and belly. Many times, however, the only way to know a Carolina wren is around by hearing its signature (and very loud) “tea-kettle, tea-kettle, tea-kettle” song.

Be sure to check out Bird Calls every Saturday from 3 to 4 p.m. on WSTC/WNLK AM1400/1350 (in S. CT and nearby NY) or www.wstcwnlk.com from anywhere in the world (where there’s Internet access, that is.) Thanks for checking in.
