A good day for ducks

With the rain coming down in Fairfield County right now, one might say it’s a good day for ducks. Well, yesterday was a good day for ducks, too. Seeing ducks, that is.

I visited a small pond in Norwalk and saw wood ducks, ring-necked ducks, hooded mergansers, gadwall, black ducks, and mallards. A good start, but the ducking was only beginning. I took a short drive to another pond and saw tons of gadwall, along with wigeon, ring-necked duck, a few cormorants, black ducks and mallards. Then I took a closer look at a white spot behind a branch on the other side of the pond and it was the white neck of a pintail drake. The hen was not far away. What a beautiful duck.

Everyone who reads my column in The Hour or The Sentinel knows I love ducks, so this was a fun day for me. I can’t wait for my annual Thanksgiving duck “hunt” with my boys.
