Bird Calls Radio Bird of the Day for Thursday, Sept. 15

The Bird Calls Radio Bird of the Day for Thursday, Sept. 15, is the razorbill. In total disclosure, the razorbill was an “extra” bird I was able to photograph in the summer of 2010. The intended quarry was the Atlantic puffin, which I also photographed (and featured as a Bird of the Day previously).

I, like most of the visitors to Machias Seal Island, were so enamored by the puffin that the razorbill was a mere afterthought — at the time, anyway. I was glad I was able to look past that and take several photographs of the razorbills, too. As the accompanying photograph shows, the razorbill is quite an interesting bird in its own right. Sure, they don’t have the colorful and massive bill of the puffin, but razorbills are pretty impressive New England seabirds, too.

It may take an off-shore trip to see them, but razorbills are certainly worth the effort.

Be sure to check out Bird Calls every Saturday from 3 to 4 p.m. on WSTC/WNLK AM1400/1350 (in S. CT and nearby NY) or https://birdcallsradio.com/listen-live/ from anywhere in the world (where there’s Internet access, that is.) Thanks for checking in.
