Bird Calls Radio's Bird of the Day for Friday, Sept. 16

The Bird Calls Radio’s Bird of the Day for Friday, Sept. 16, is the tufted titmouse. The tufted titmouse, in my opinion is one of New England’s more underrated birds. I rarely hear people talk about titmice as it is overshadowed by other lovable little birds such as the chickadee.

The titmouse, however, is a reliable little friend of our backyards and woodlands. They are especially welcome during winter as they visit feeders throughout the coldest of days. They ten visit in mixed flocks with chickadees.

In spring you can hear the loud, clear whistles of the titmouse burst through the air. They also have other, more subtle calls.

So what’s the plural anyway? Titmice or titmouses? I’ve usually seen both, but 99 times out of a 100 I see titmice. I’ve heard arguments against this, but I still prefer titmice.

Be sure to check out Bird Calls every Saturday from 3 to 4 p.m. on WSTC/WNLK AM1400/1350 (in S. CT and nearby NY) or https://birdcallsradio.com/listen-live/ from anywhere in the world (where there’s Internet access, that is.) Thanks for checking in.
