Bird Calls Radio's Bird of the Day for Friday, Sept. 9

The Bird Calls Radio’s Bird of the Day for Friday, Sept. 9, is the black-and-white warbler. Warblers are known as colorful birds, but not so much with the black-and-white warbler. It is nonetheless a welcomed sight for any New England birder. In fact, I saw one the other day — one of my first fall warblers.

I often see black-and-white warblers foraging near the ground on fallen branches. They often allow a close approach, but they are still difficult to photograph as they do not sit still for very long _ or at all really. They are known to creep along trees and branches, a foraging technique somewhat unique among warblers.

This is the bird that sounds like a squeaky wheel when it sings in the spring. They can be difficult to find — like most warblers _ but their squeaky wheel song is often heard among the woods.

Be sure to check out Bird Calls every Saturday from 3 to 4 p.m. on WSTC/WNLK AM1400/1350 (in S. CT and nearby NY) or https://birdcallsradio.com/listen-live/ from anywhere in the world (where there’s Internet access, that is.) Thanks for checking in.
