Bird Calls Radio's Bird of the Day for July 19
There was a point this spring during which everyone I talked to (it seemed) was excitedly telling me about a Baltimore oriole they had just seen. Must be a good year for the colorful birds.
During a bird walk in Selleck’s Woods, a group I was with found a nest of an oriole. It’s amazing to me that these birds live in these hanging weave nests. How do the nests not fall down?
Orioles can be attracted to yards with oranges, jelly and nectar — although I personally have never had any luck doing it. Oh well, I’ll keep on trying.
I know I say this about a lot of birds, but Baltimore oriole are one of the more colorful birds in New England. Always a thrill to see. Despite their coloration, they are part of — you guessed it — the blackbird family.
Be sure to check out Bird Calls every Saturday from 3 to 4 p.m. on WSTC/WNLK AM1400/1350 (in S. CT and nearby NY) or www.wstcwnlk.com from anywhere in the world (where there’s Internet access, that is.) Thanks for checking in.
