Bird Calls Radio's Bird of the Day for Saturday, Aug. 27
The Bird Calls Radio Bird of the Day for Saturday, Aug. 27, is the white-crowned sparrow. This bird is not seen often enough in New England and, in fact, often draws a “rare bird alert” listing when it does show up. They usually show up in our region in the winter.
I had the above pictured bird at my feeder several years ago and I’ve been waiting for another since. They somewhat resemble white-throated sparrows, but have a much more distinct crown. The crown is _ all together now _ white, hence the bird’s name. The contrasting black-and-white crown (stripes) and overall large size make for a somewhat easy identification, especially compared with some of our other sparrows.
They breed well north of here and usually winter in parts south of New England. Look for them during migration periods.
Be sure to check out Bird Calls every Saturday from 3 to 4 p.m. on WSTC/WNLK AM1400/1350 (in S. CT and nearby NY) or www.wstcwnlk.com from anywhere in the world (where there’s Internet access, that is.) Thanks for checking in.
