The wild turkey is the Bird Calls Radio’s Bird of the Day for Thursday, July 28. It’s amazing that wild turkeys are so commonplace in New England these days. It wasn’t too long ago that wild turkeys had almost disappeared from the New England landscape. Speaking of landscape, it was the changing New England landscape that nearly spelled doom for the impressive bird as wooded habitat was transformed to farms.

Reintroduction programs and the landscape regaining woodlands in New England meant for a strong comeback for the wild turkey. Now they are commonly seen along roadside and at backyard feeders.

They may be common in New England, but to see a male strut its stuff during the breeding season is always a thrill for birders.

Be sure to check out Bird Calls every Saturday from 3 to 4 p.m. on WSTC/WNLK AM1400/1350 (in S. CT and nearby NY) or www.wstcwnlk.com from anywhere in the world (where there’s Internet access, that is.) Thanks for checking in.
