Congratulations to birders
Congrats are in order for birdwatchers all across the country. The Great Backyard Bird Count set a record with more than 104,000 checklists turned in. That’s significant because the more people who are interested in birds, the greater chance we have to protect and save the birds.
The GBBC is a project of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the Audubon Society. John Fitzpatrick, director of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, was a guest on BirdCallsRadio the week before the GBBC and he said he hoped to top 100,000 checklists this year. Well, he got his wish. Good job, birders.
Need a refresher on why the GBBC is important? Listen to the archive of the John Fitzpatrick show here. Go to BCR Archives above and look for John Fitzpatrick #2
A few quick stats from the GBBC:
The cardinal was recorded on the most checklists (48,875).
The snow goose was the most prolific (3,259,469). (Apparently there were some massive flocks).
Snowy owl numbers were way up in the Great Plains.
New York turned in the most checklists and California logged the most species (333).

As always, thanks for your support of of BirdCallsRadio.
