When I conducted a very informal survey of my For the Birds column readers several years ago about “New England’s favorite bird,” the chickadee and cardinal took the first two spots.

The crow was nowhere near the top, but a few readers did vote for the crow and wrote impassioned reasons why the large black bird was indeed their favorite. Many people see the crow as a villan, stealing eggs and baby birds of other bird species. Other people see crows as extremely smart birds worthy of admiration.

John Marzluff and Tony Angell fall in the second category. They are the authors of “Gifts of the Crow: How Perception, Emotion, and Thought Allow Smart Birds to Behave Like Humans,” which was recently released by Free Press.
