What a morning of birdsong!

As I contemplated getting out of bed this morning, my wild avian friends singing outside the window kept my mind occupied figuring out what was out there. Usually I hear three or four species, but this morning was unusually busy.

Here’s a rundown of what I heard — all sharing airspace at the same time. What a way to start the day.

Northern cardinal (clear, varies whistles. VERY loud in the morning)

Blue jay

Carolina wren

Song sparrow (beautiful song that’s thankfully heard often)

White-throated sparrow (great to still hear them around)

Red-bellied woodpecker (funny “querulous song”)

Northern flicker

Black-capped chickadee

Fish crow

All common species, but a fun way to wake up. It also stresses the importance of learning how to “bird by ear.” It adds to the challenge of birdwatching and who doesn’t like a challenge.

Let me know what you’re hearing our there … drop me a line here.
