BCR 140: Helen Hays, Great Gull Island 50th
On today’s show, I am reporting live from the celebration of Helen Hays, Great Gull Island 50th year Anniversery, Chester Meeting House, Chester, CT on September 15, 2018 and the 50th Anniversary of the Tern Research on Great Gull Island. Great Gull Island is off the Eastern tip of Long Island between Plum Island and Fishers Island. Tern research became her life’s work, Helen Hays has spent every summer on the Island for the last 50 years.
Helen Hays has directed, since 1969, the work on the ongoing Tern Research project on Great Gull Island. This project was designed to study and preserve this major tern colony for the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, which gained control of the Island in 1949. The Great Gull Island tern colony attracted this summer 9,500 pairs of Common Terns and 1,300 pair of Federally Endangered Roseate Terns making this the largest such colony of Roseate’s in the Western Hemisphere.
