The Bird Calls Radio Bird of the Day for Wednesday, Aug. 3, is the brown thrasher. Beside having a very cool (and intimidating) name, the brown thrasher is a great sighting in New England.

Thrashers are mimics and would give a mockingbird a run for its money on the song front any day. I listened to one several years ago for quite some time and walked away very impressed by its repertoire.

Thrashers are usually found in shrubby areas and can be secretive for a largish bird. While the brown plumage and spotted chest and belly make for a handsome birds, it’s the intense yellow eyes that are my favorite feature.

Be sure to check out Bird Calls every Saturday from 3 to 4 p.m. on WSTC/WNLK AM1400/1350 (in S. CT and nearby NY) or www.wstcwnlk.com from anywhere in the world (where there’s Internet access, that is.) Thanks for checking in.
