Bird Calls Radio's Bird of the Day for July 17

Scarlet tanager by Chris Bosak

Here’s the Bird Calls Radio Bird of the Day. If this bird is not bright enough for you, you need a new hobby.

The scarlet tanager is one of New England’s most striking birds with its brilliant red plumage and contrasting black wings. Scarlet tanagers are migrants, passing through New England each spring and coming back through in the fall. If you’re lucky and live far north enough, you may even have tanagers nesting near you.

If you can’t wait to see the tanagers’ bright red feathers again this fall, you’re out of luck. Male tanagers molt their bright red feathers in exchange for duller yellow/olive ones in the fall. Oh well, there’s always next spring.

Be sure to check out Bird Calls every Saturday from 3 to 4 p.m. on WSTC/WNLK AM1400/1350 (in S. CT and nearby NY) or www.wstcwnlk.com from anywhere in the world (where there’s Internet access, that is.) Thanks for checking in.
