The Bird Calls radio’s Bird of the Day for Monday, Sept. 26, is the black-capped chickadee. One of New England’s favorite birds, the black-capped chickadee is a common feeder bird. This lovable bird remains with us throughout the long winter and warms the days with its regular visits to backyard feeders.

The chickadee can sometimes be trained to feed from human’s hands. It takes patience and a still hand, but it can be done.

Chickadees are one of several New England birds that are named for what they say: “chickadee dee dee.” They also have other calls, but the “chickadee” song is the most well known.

The chickadee won my “For the Birds” favorite bird contest I conducted through my weekly birdwatching column among readers of The Keene Sentinel in Keene, NH. The cardinal won the favorite bird contest among The Hour readers in southern Connecticut.
