The house wren is the Bird Calls Radio Bird of the Day. One of the most common backyard nesters in New England, house wrens are known to nest wherever available space exists in a yard. I’ve even seen house wrens put straw in a mailbox of a vacant house. I hope the chicks were fledged by the time someone bought the house and moved in.
House wrens, small as they may be, are feisty little things. Once they’ve established a territory, they will chase away all other birds that try to come into the territory.
Their cousins, Carolina wrens and winter wrens, are also New England birds, but are not as common as the house wren. Winter wrens are seasonal visitors to most part of New England. Carolina wrens are southern birds moving their territory northwards. Carolina wrens, however, unlike house wrens frequently spend their winters with us.
