Bird Calls Radio's Bird of the Day for Sunday, Sept. 25

The Bird Calls Radio’s Bird of the Day for Sunday, Sept. 25, is the horned lark. Horned larks are a real treat for birdwatchers during a New England winter _ yes, I know it’s not winter, but I’ve been wanting to feautre this bird.

When they are found it is usually in a field or at a beach. I found this guy at Compo Beach in Westport, Conn., a few winters ago. Snow buntings are often found where horned larks are found. In fact, that day at Compo a much larger representation of snow buntings were present than horned larks.

They are named for the black “horns” on their head that sometimes visible. An attractive bird all round with yellow and black markings. Sparrow-sized or slightly larger.

The only true lark in North America.

Be sure to check out Bird Calls every Saturday from 3 to 4 p.m. on WSTC/WNLK AM1400/1350 (in S. CT and nearby NY) or https://birdcallsradio.com/listen-live/ from anywhere in the world (where there’s Internet access, that is.) Thanks for checking in.
