Bird Calls Radio's Bird of the Day for Thursday, Aug. 25

The Bird Calls Radio Bird of the Day for Thursday, Aug. 25, is the snow goose. In southern Connecticut, when I see snow geese, it’s usually a lone snow goose hanging out with a flock of Canada geese. They stand out like sore thumbs among the brown geese. Sometimes a snow goose is spotted during the Christmas Bird Count in southern New England. Usually it’s with a flock of Canada geese.

Spotting a lone snow goose is a far cry from the classic photos you see of thousands of snow geese blocking the sky. I’ve seen these classic large flocks south of New England  in Delaware and Virginia, and smaller flocks in Cape May, New Jersey. I’ve also seen large flocks at Plum Island on the north coast of Massachusetts.

It’s always a thrill to see these large flocks, but if a lone snow goose is all I can hope for in southern Connecticut, I’ll take it.

Be sure to check out Bird Calls every Saturday from 3 to 4 p.m. on WSTC/WNLK AM1400/1350 (in S. CT and nearby NY) or www.wstcwnlk.com from anywhere in the world (where there’s Internet access, that is.) Thanks for checking in.
