The Bird Calls Radio Bird of the Day for Wednesday, Aug. 24, is the rock pigeon. Why not feature the pigeon? They are certainly a big part of our birdscape here in New England, like it or not.

Call them flying rats or whatever, pigeons are here to stay. Usually pigeons are found in cities and other urban areas, but they may also be spotted at backyard feeders on occasion and even some somewhat wild places. I’m not a big fan of pigeons, but their tame nature does make for some interesting experiences. They are also good for entertaining kids as they chase the birds around.

I was relieved a few years ago when the official name of this bird was changed to rock pigeon from rock dove. If it walks like a pigeon, acts like a pigeon and looks like a pigeon, it’s a pigeon.
