Dave Magpiong and Dr. J. Drew Lanham discuss diversity among birdwatchers and the upcoming Focus on Diversity II conference on this episode of BirdCallsRadio, which aired originally on Sunday, Sept. 16, 2012.

Focus on Diversity II, which will take place on Oct. 13, at Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge in Bloomington, Minnesota. The objective of the conference is to “promote effective outreach to more diverse audiences with birding opportunities, outdoor recreation, and conservation messages.

Magpiong and Lanham talk frankly and directly about the importance of the birding community becoming more diverse. The future of conservation may very well depend on it. Listen to this show to hear Magpiong’s and Lanham’s thoughts on the matter.

Lanham, PhD, is a professor of Wildlife Ecology at Clemson University. His book, “The Home Place: Memoirs of a Colored Man’s Love Affair with Nature,” which is soon to be released, takes a personal look at the issue of diversity in the American outdoors.

Magpiong, the founder of Fledging Birders Institute, is a special education teacher in New Jersey and has introduced birding to countless children.
