Dave Magpiong & Dr. J. Drew Lanham next guests on BirdCallsRadio
Dave Magpiong and Dr. J. Drew Lanham will be the next guests on BirdCallsRadio, coming up this Sunday, Sept. 16, from 1 to 2 p.m. on 1490 WGCH in southwestern Connecticut and nearby N.Y., and worldwide at Listen Live.
Magpiong and Lanham will discuss Focus on Diversity II, which will take place on Oct. 13, at Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge in Bloomington, Minnesota. The objective of the conference is to “promote effective outreach to more diverse audiences with birding opportunities, outdoor recreation, and conservation messages,” according to the Website www.fledgingbirders.org. It continues: “By sharing the great outdoors together, we will enhance our lives and promote a strong societal conservation ethic.”
Lanham, PhD, is a professor of Wildlife Ecology at Clemson University. He is a passionate birder who has shared birds with hundreds of undergraduates and mentored nearly 40 graduate students. He is an inaugural fellow of National Audubon Society/Toyota’s Together Green Initiative and a board member of the Wildlife Society’s Ethnic and Gender Diversity Committee, as well as other conservation groups in South Carolina. As a freelance writer, Lanham often explores the connection between people of color and nature. His book, “The Home Place: Memoirs of a Colored Man’s Love Affair with Nature,” which is soon to be released, takes a personal look at the issue of diversity in the American outdoors.
Magpiong will be making his second appearance on BirdCallsRadio as he recently was interviewed on the show prior to the Pledge to Fledge weekend, of which he was a founder and organizer. He is a special education teacher in New Jersey and has introduced birding to countless children. He also plays an active role in the world of conservation. In 2005, he launched the Fledging Birders website, and in 2009, he founded the Fledging Birders Institute.
This promises to be a great show about an important topic. Be sure to tune in and thanks for your support of BirdCallsRadio.
