(Prelude to this blog posting: Mark Obmascik, the author of “The Big Year” will be the guest on this week’s Bird Calls Radio program.)

An AP movie critic gave the birding movie “The Big Year,” which opens this Friday, a relatively poor review, giving it a two out of four stars. The writer, Christy Lemire, opines: “Ultimately, though, the who-cares? factor in watching men chase birds is just too insurmountable.”

Oh man, I can’t wait to see this movie now. If birding gets in the way of traditional movie garbage, I’m all for it.

Sure, movies need to cater to a general audience to rake in the money, but as a birder, I’m looking forward to seeing the film more after reading the review. The reviewer called The Big Year a contest that is “something extremely specific that will probably only interest a few people in the audience.”

Jack Black, Steve Martin, Owen Wilson … birds, birds, birds. Count me in!

(By the way, I’ve also read several positive reviews.)

Mark Obmascik, the author of T”he Big Year,” the 2004 book on which the movie is based, will be the guest on this week’s Bird Calls Radio program. Be sure to tune!
