Bird Calls Radio's Bird of the Day for Thursday, Sept. 22

American kestrel by Chris Bosak (copyright, all rights reserved)

The Bird Calls Radio’s Bird of the Day for Thursday, Sept. 22, is the American kestrel. The kestrel is New England’s smallest falcon. Males are very colorful, especially for birds of prey, which are usually dressed in rather muted colors.

Kestrels are usually seen flying over fields, looking for prey, such as grasshoppers and small mammals. Their wing beat is very rapid, like all falcons. They may also be seen perched on obvious perches in fields, such as fence posts.

They may nest in man-made cavity boxes. The above kestrel is checking out a box at Earthplace in Westport.

Be sure to check out Bird Calls every Saturday from 3 to 4 p.m. on WSTC/WNLK AM1400/1350 (in S. CT and nearby NY) or https://birdcallsradio.com/listen-live/ from anywhere in the world (where there’s Internet access, that is.) Thanks for checking in.
