We discuss in detail the new book, which was published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. The book is billed as an “essential reference for nature lovers living in or visiting Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut.”

The book, which features more than 2,000 color photographs, includes sections on birds, mammals, trees, wildflowers, insects, reptiles, amphibians, fishes, spiders, mushrooms, ferns, and sea shells.

“The Kaufman Field Guide to Nature of New England provides endless potential to make personal discoveries about nature,” reads promotional material for the book.

During their October book tour, which takes them to 14 locations in six states, they are challenging themselves to identify 350 different kinds of living things during that two week period. Fans and nature lovers can virtually follow along on their tour by checking in to their website (http://birdingwithkennandkim.blogspot.com/).

The book is the latest in The Kaufman Field Guide series that began in 2000 with the publication of the “Kaufman Field Guide to Birds.” The series also includes books on mammals, butterflies, insects and advanced birding.

Kenn is one of the world’s best-known bird experts and is the originator of the Kaufman Field Guide series. He also wrote Lives of North American Birds and two birding memoirs, Flights Against the Sunset and the classic Kingbird Highway. Kenn is also a field editor for Audubon and a contributor to several birding and nature magazines.

Kimberly Kaufman is the executive director of the Black Swamp Bird Observatory in Ohio and a contributing editor to Birds & Blooms magazine. She has traveled throughout the New England states in pursuit of natural history subjects and has taught at the Audubon Camp in Maine.
