While many migrating birds haven’t even arrived in New England yet, some birds are already busy raising young. I came across this killdeer family at a cemetery in Darien, Conn., the other day.

To me, it seems a little early for birds such as killdeer to have chicks, but I haven’t been tracking them over the years. Well, now I have a starting point. I saw these chicks on Wednesday, April 25, 2012.

I’ve always liked killdeer. This “shorebird” often lays its eggs in large fields or parking lots.

Of course the birds’ safety is always paramount. Use caution around nests and chicks and don’t stress the birds.

Any thoughts on the matter? Feel free to drop me a line.
